Last week, we covered the headlines. This week, we'll take a look at emerging science and real food success stories.

Emerging Science

  1. A well written, detailed post from Drs. Wood, McKenzie, Volek and Phinney of Virta Health, discusses the impressive improvement in CVD markers seen after 1 year with Virta's T2D reversal protocol, which includes a low-carb, high-fat diet. Peer reviewed study published in Cardiovascular Diabetology.

  2. The New York Times (and MedPage) report on a new survey out of Boston Children's Hospital, published in AAP's Pediatrics, demonstrating exceptional glucose control in patients (both adults and children) with T1 diabetes consuming a very low-carb diet and using less insulin. These patients also report fewer adverse events like hypoglycemia. This was not an RCT, but is nonetheless very encouraging data that documents an otherwise unheard of phenomenon: normal blood glucose levels for those with Type 1 diabetes.
  3. Another small, short duration RCT published in the British Journal of Nutrition shows replacing carbohydrates with fat and protein improves glucose control and satiety in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  4. New analysis of Framingham data published in Diabetes Care examines association between CHD and CVD mortality and prediabetes. Those who develop prediabetes before age 50 (yet never progress to diabetes) experience more CHD death than those who maintain normal blood sugars. Odds Ratio = 1.81. Separately, a study by Quest Labs team shows HbA1c is a much better predictor of risk of developing prediabetes than fasting blood glucose.
  5. "Nutritional epidemiology is a scandal," Stanford University Professor of Medicine Dr. John Ioannidis told CBC News. "It should just go to the waste bin," But instead, policies and guidelines are ultimately crafted from this biased body of evidence characterized by Ioannidis as "complete chaos." Case in point, the World Health Organization is indicating it will recommend a cap on dietary saturated fat at 10% of total calories, based on poor quality nutritional epidemiology... complete chaos.

Real Food Success Stories

Success isn't just about weight loss:

But weight loss can be transformative:

  • Utah dad Dave Anderson loses 100 pound with keto. He believes his very-low-carb diet is healthy and sustainable and his wife is on board: “He has more energy for the kids and the honey-do list.” That settles it!
  • Beautiful young mom loses 100 pounds with kickboxing and a keto diet, including delicious (low-carb) pizza! Her dietary changes have meant better health for the whole family!
